Yes, you’ve read the title correctly: Google might be sued for using the name Nexus One for its new Android handset. Phillip K Dick, a sci-fi author has written a novel entitled “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” in which it uses the name Nexus-6 for cyborgs.
According to the Guardian, Isa Dick Hackett, the daughter of the author, was shocked when she figured out Google is using the name Nexus One for their newest phone, as Google has no permission to use that name.
It’s also been reported that Dick sent a not very nice letter to Google, about using that name. We can guess the amount of profanity in it. Just kidding
.
Bad news for Google: It seems as they will have to acquire a license from Dick if they want to use the Nexus One name. Besides, Motorola had to get one as well: their Droid handset has the same name as the droid robots in the famous Star Wars films.
So, will Google be sued? Will they have to change the name or will they get a license? We’ll just have to wait and see. I just hope this whole story doesn’t prevent the Nexus One from appearing in stores.
